After leaving home by car, we head for Takijiri Oji (859 Kurisugawa, Nakaheji-cho, Tanabe City), which is believed to be the beginning of the Kumano Sanzan sacred area. Father and son trekking along the Kumano Kodo get out of the car here, while mother drives ahead to SEN.RETREAT TAKAHARA.

Takijiri Oji is one of the most important and highly ranked of the Kumano 99 Oji, shrines dedicated to Kumano deities scattered along the Kumano Kodo, and is one of the five highest-ranking Oji.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kumano Kodo Museum, with its distinctive dodecagonal roof, displays materials related to the Kumano Kodo and provides tourist information. Takijiri Teahouse serves hamburgers made with local pickles, so it’s a good place to fill up before trekking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walk for 5 minutes to Takahara Kumano Shrine. This is a historic place, believed to be the oldest shrine on the Kumano Kodo. The large camphor tree in the precincts is so powerful that you can’t help but look up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
